How to Fund a School Playground: Grants, Fundraising, and Financing

Every principal, PTA president, and facilities director knows the feeling: you walk past your school's aging playground and picture what it could be. Brighter, engaging, more inclusive. A place where every kid actually wants to spend recess. The vision is easy. Finding the money is the hard part.

A new school playground rarely comes from one check. Successful schools usually assemble a funding stack consisting of district capital dollars, grants, PTO support, community donations, sponsorships, and financing that spreads costs across several budget years.

Read on to discover the most practical funding strategies available to K–12 schools in 2026, from grants you can apply for right now to creative community fundraising ideas that build school spirit along the way.

How Much Does a School Playground Cost?

Before pursuing funding, it helps to know what you're working toward. A new school playground can range from roughly $15,000 for a small installation to well over $150,000 for a fully

From the Dragway to the Playground: Community Partners Transform Historic Shuffletown Site into a Place for the Next Generation

Coca-Cola Consolidated, Charlotte Motor Speedway, NASCAR, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, Partners for Parks, and hundreds of volunteers unite to build a new playground honoring Charlotte's racing heritage.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 30, 2026) — For decades, the sounds of engines echoed across Shuffletown Dragway as drivers lined up at the starting line in search of speed. This week, a different kind of race begins.

On Thursday, July 30, community volunteers will gather at Shuffletown Park to build a brand-new playground on the site of the former Shuffletown Dragway, transforming a place once known for horsepower into one designed for imagination, adventure, and play.

The community build is being coordinated by Cunningham Recreation and its community engagement division, Play 4 ALL, with GameTime playground equipment and installation made possible through a major gift from Coca-Cola Consolidated, in partnership with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, Charlotte Motor

It’s Not a Need, It’s a Must: Products For Every Park

A great park is more than open space. It is a place where families gather, children play, communities connect, and people of all ages find ways to move.

With Parks and Recreation Month taking place in July, it is the perfect time to celebrate the spaces that help bring communities together. It is also a great reminder that the right park products can make a big difference.

From shade and gathering areas to inclusive play and outdoor fitness, here are a few products every park should consider.

Shelters

Shelters are one of the most useful additions to any park. Salora park and playground shelters combine modern design with durable, weather-resistant materials. After all the only thing that should be melting this summer is a popsicle, not park visitors.

Whether used for birthday parties, picnics, school outings, or special events, shelters help extend the time people spend at the park. They also create a natural meeting point that makes a park feel more welcoming and complete.
